Botswana Safari

Ten days in the bush with six guests, once a year

Botswana is one of the finest places in Africa to see wildlife. It holds the largest elephant population on the continent, roughly 130,000 animals, along with a full complement of predators, a wonderful range of grazers and browsers, and extraordinary birdlife.

In the right season, the pans of the Kalahari also host one of Africa’s great zebra migrations.

Each year I take a small group beyond the tarmac and into the bush for ten days on a fully catered mobile safari with EarthArk Africa.

We spend our days exploring with Steven Stockhall, co-owner of EarthArk and a brilliant guide: hugely experienced, sharp-eyed and very funny. He has a gift for getting you close to the animals without disturbing them, and for explaining what you’re watching.

The local crew sets up camp ahead of us. After a day out in the field, we sit down under the African sky to a good dinner and a drink, swapping stories from the day, usually with a lot of laughter. Each tent has its own ensuite and proper beds, and the crew brings fresh hot water for the shower and basin every morning and evening.

Many of the animals in my drawings I first photographed in Botswana, and I still come home from every trip with new references and ideas. If you want to see wildlife properly, at its own pace, it’s hard to think of a better place to do it.

Optional additions: A visit to Elephant Havens elephant orphanage; the incredible Victoria Falls; Cape Town.

Places are limited to six guests. Whether this would be your first trip to Africa or your tenth, get in touch and I’ll tell you more.
